More basketball people are recognizing the problem that the off-hand's thumb can do to a shot. However, please notice where the thumb of the shooting hand is after release. We find more and more that that thumb winds up under the palm. When that happens, it will tend to push the ball to miss on the dominant side and tend to cause missing short. The thumb squeezing under the palm pushes the ball to the fingertips too soon.
If you've ever felt a lack of control in your release, it could likely be a thumb problem.
Our message to your non-dominant thumb is STAY OFF. Our message to the other thumb is STAY OUT.

If you are missing long a lot, pay attention to how close your shooting hand gets to your forehead. If shooting with a baseball cap on would cause you to bump the cap off your head, that is the most likely cause of missing long.

Do you have shots that rattle around the rim and pop out? That usually signals a need for more arc. More arc can be achieved by ensuring that the elbow finishes above the eyebrow.

I see some common flaws that are closely connected, but when one is solved, the next is easier to fix. The loading of the wrist is necessary to have the ball feel secure in your grip and to prevent pinching the angle at the elbow while lifting. If that angle is pinched into a "V" shape, it will often lead to missing long with a flat arc. Good doctors are supposed to get to the core cause of the problem in order to fix more obvious "symptoms." Is a flat wrist, rather a loaded wrist, your core problem? Catch passes and pick up your dribble with a loaded wrist immediately. Don't load while lifting; at best, you'll have inconsistent results.

One of the most difficult shooting flaws to notice is the two-motion shot. When it is a bit more obvious, some people call it a hitch. When it is subtle, here is what to observe. When the ball is lifted to forehead level, does it come close to the forehead? If so, the ball is pausing ever so slightly. Here is what the two-motion shot causes: a loss of some power, a flatter arc and a slower release.
The one-motion shot has more power, better arc and a quicker release.
Have someone watch or record the arc of your shot from a side view. Watch not only the arc, but how close you bring the ball to your forehead while lifting.
