Everyone has a story. The Human Library gives you the chance to hear those stories firsthand.

Join us for an evening of conversation, connection and celebration of the experiences that make us who we are. At the Human Library, people become “Books,” sharing their personal stories and lived experiences with “Readers” through open, respectful conversation.

Come ready to listen, ask questions, and discover a new perspective.

4-8 p.m.
Student Union Room 100 (Hawk’s Nest Grill and Deli)

The event will also feature tables from AACC and community organizations where you can learn about available programs, services and resources.

Help us welcome Dan Mathias, who was recently sworn in as a member of the AACC Board of Trustees! 🎉

Dan Mathias attended Anne Arundel Community College before transferring to the University of Maryland, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Fire Protection Engineering in 1989. That same year, he co-founded Absolute Fire Protection. He earned his professional engineer license in 1996 and remained with the company for more than 35 years. After more than 37 years in the fire protection industry, Dan retired in August 2026.

Dan has served on numerous local boards and is the immediate past president of the Anne Arundel Community College Foundation. In addition to his board service, he has contributed to the fire protection industry by teaching a fire sprinkler apprenticeship program for eight years, serving on the test writing committee for the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, and participating in the development and revision of fire sprinkler codes through the National Fire Protection Association’s residential sprinkler committee.

September is Su***de Prevention Month. Su***de is preventable!

If you or someone you know is displaying warning signs of su***de or worrisome changes in behavior, it is vital to get connected to help immediately.

The first step is identifying trusted people who make you feel safe, supported, and respected. This could be family, friends, professors, doctors, etc. The next step is telling them how you feel.

Starting a conversation about suicidal thoughts can be difficult but is brave.
“Can I talk to you about something hard I’ve been feeling?”
“Lately, I’ve been struggling to feel hopeful.”
“Do you have space to talk today?”

Some warning signs include:
-Talking about wanting to die/not wanting to live
-Expressing feelings of hopelessness, being trapped, being a burden
-Dramatic mood changes (significantly worse or improved)
-Increased isolation and withdrawal from family, friends, social interaction
-Changes in sleep (sleeping too much or less than usual)
-Changes in appearance, hygiene, performance (grades dropping, missing work, declining participation)
-Problems managing daily responsibilities: schoolwork, work tasks, household chores, self-care
-Losing interest in activities previously enjoyed
-Lack of motivation
-Giving away meaningful items
-Looking for ways to access lethal means (fi****ms, medication, rope, dangerous locations) or creating a su***de plan

Want more information? Check out Maryland Department of Health Office of Su***de Prevention.

AACC Personal Counseling is also here to support you. Request an appointment online, email [email protected] or call 410-777-7111.
