The Communications Department faculty are soooo proud of 2017 graduate Adam Hertz, a finance leader and civic advocate who served on a community panel for today’s Fall Convocation! He had excelled in the COM 111-SOC 111 Just Us: Social Justice for a Just World Learning Community taught by Dr. April Copes and Dr. Phil Terry-Smith and served as the student member of the AACC Board of Trustees. He now serves as the Treasurer for the AACC Foundation Board of Directors. Professionally, Adam is the Manager of Financial Planning and Analysis at Chase Braxton Health Care. 👏🏽🎉

Join us in wishing Journalism and Communications Professor, Sharon O’Malley a happy retirement! 🌟
For the past 10 years, Professor O’Malley taught journalism, media and public speaking classes at . 🗞️ And she advised the award-winning student newspaper, The Campus Current.
The newspaper is active online and in print, making the only MD community college with a print edition. Over the years, the paper has hosted events and special field trips for students including visiting the WTOP newsroom where students connected with anchors and staff in an active newsroom! As well out of state trips to student news conventions. The paper serves as a way for students to gain real experience offering roles in reporting, photography, editing, graphic design and more! The Campus Current has covered news including events, athletics, performances, etc. and told countless student, faculty, and staff stories. Professor O’Malley made it all happen with the help of her dedicated students! 📰
From the article by Taylor 4/16/26: O’Malley “is proud of the newspaper and especially of her former students who have gone on to journalism jobs at places like CNN, Bloomberg and The Hill newspaper. She pointed to one student who won a fellowship to the University of Maryland, Philip Merrill College of Journalism Graduate School with no journalism experience except as the editor-in-chief of Campus Current.” A former journalism professor at the University of Maryland, she worked with the institution to establish transfer equivalencies for select journalism courses, helping to set students up for a more seamless transfer experience. 🎓
This spring, Professor O’Malley received a distinguished service award from the Journalism and Communications department! We thank her for her dedication to our department, our students and Anne Arundel Community College. You will be greatly missed! ❤️

Congratulations to Larry White, Sr., who will serve as the new Student Representative on AACC’s Board of Trustees! Larry is a Business Communications major and plans to transfer to Bowie State University after he graduates to prepare for a career in public relations. In his words, “I enjoy working with visuals and technology, and I like the idea of turning creative ideas into something people can see and interact with.” Larry is the Treasurer of the Student Veterans Association and active in the Student Achievement & Success Program and Black Male Institute. This summer he is enrolled in COM 110: Interpersonal Communication.

So far, “I have only taken Communications 101. Initially, I was unsure of what I wanted my focus to be, but after taking this course, it helped me narrow down my field of interest for the transfer studies program to majoring in Communications. This course showed many different areas of communications which peaked my interest in the field due to its vast area of opportunities.” ~COM major, Bella 🌟
Bella told us about a social media project she completed for COM 101. She created a brand to improve the concert ticket buying experience! “Throughout my life, I have always expressed a deep love for music. Whether going to concerts, or simply listening to music on my drive to and from class, it has consistently brought me joy.” 🎶
It’s really cool to be able to apply your passions into your schoolwork. Take a COM class with us!

Meet COM major, Mitch! He just completed his first year at AACC and was a student in COM 141 and 101. Mitch is passionate about sports and is on the men’s lacrosse team. In COM 101, he completed a social media marketing pitch for a lacrosse blog providing scores, player spotlights, rankings, etc. After AACC, he plans to attend UMD to pursue communications with a sports focus. 🥍
We asked Mitch to share advice to students, he said “My one piece of advice is to “put yourself out there”. I was having trouble making friends, and the minute I started talking, the more friendships I made. Although two years go by fast, everyone is in the same boat and has a certain number of friends who are away at college or just busy. By making friends with others at community college, you have something to look forward to each day. If you are having trouble, also join a team or a club. AACC from what I have seen has tons of opportunities for you to connect and make friends.”

Shout out to Chenlle, grad on an awesome year! She is our newly elected VP of Public Relations 🥳 She gained hands on experience during her Crosby Marketing Scholarship internship. When speaking with Dr. Copes, she said 🎤 “Being a Crosby Marketing Scholar has allowed me to grow professionally, but also showed me that communication is more than just presenting to the public but about storytelling and connecting with numerous audiences to make a difference.”

The recent celebration of the 2025-26 Crosby Marketing Scholars was beyond inspiring! Two of the four students in this year’s cohort were Communications majors! Congratulations Amirah Brown and Chenlle Raghunanan!
Amirah, a nontraditional student interested in technology and graphic design, manages school while homeschooling her children. Chenlle is graduating with her A.A. in Communications this month! Along with cohort member, Octavia Carr (a Studio Arts major), their projects contributed to the development of a social media kit for the Maryland Public Defenders Office (MPDO), including infographics, outreach materials and social media concepts. Amirah sought to add empathy to the social media messaging and design responsible AI guidance for the public. Chenlle created her first infographic to provide clients with mental health support. The fourth members of the group, Micah Walker, is a Time-based/Media Production major and aspiring filmmaker.
