The Student Achievement and Success Program is a support and retention program at Anne Arundel Community College.

The Student Achievement and Success Program (SASP) is a support and retention program at Anne Arundel Community College designed to increase the academic success, retention, graduation and transfer of students who traditionally may have more barriers and challenges to overcome in order to realize their goals. In addition, these students are traditionally first generation students, low income, under prepared and minority students. Services provided included incentive scholarships, walk-in tutoring, life skill/study strategy workshops, and cultural activities, campus visits, informal interactions with faculty/staff and academic monitoring.

🎉🪅 Creativity, Culture & Community!🪅🎉

We had an amazing time at our Cultural Traditions: A Creative Celebration & DIY Piñata Workshop in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month! 🌎❤️

Guests had the opportunity to create their very own piñatas from scratch and take their creations home, all while enjoying a variety of Hispanic candies, receiving FREE Hispanic Heritage Month T-shirts, and walking away with plenty of fun giveaways! 🍬👕🎁

More than just a craft, this event created a space to celebrate culture, learn through creativity, connect with one another, and experience a tradition that holds special meaning across many Latin American communities.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, got creative, and helped make this celebration such a great experience! Seeing all of the different piñata designs come to life was definitely a highlight. 🪅✨

¡Pasamos un momento increíble durante nuestro evento Tradiciones Culturales: Una Celebración Creativa y Taller de Piñatas DIY, en conmemoración del Mes de la Herencia Hispana! 🌎❤️

Los participantes tuvieron la oportunidad de crear sus propias piñatas desde cero y llevarse sus creaciones a casa, mientras disfrutaban de una variedad de dulces hispanos, recibían camisetas GRATIS del Mes de la Herencia Hispana y se llevaban muchos otros obsequios. 🍬👕🎁

Más que una actividad creativa, este evento nos brindó un espacio para celebrar la cultura, aprender a través de la creatividad, conectarnos como comunidad y compartir una tradición con un significado especial en muchas comunidades latinoamericanas.

¡Gracias a todos los que nos acompañaron, mostraron su creatividad y ayudaron a hacer de esta celebración una experiencia tan especial! Ver cómo cada piñata cobraba vida con diseños únicos fue, sin duda, uno de los mejores momentos. 🪅✨

What a great kick off to Hispanic Heritage month, last week with Chef Santos demonstration on a twist to tres leches cake. This piña colada flavored was inspired by a family recipe for one of the students. Amazing to see the work happening in the kitchen and the influence our students bring.

Welcome our NEW SASP Advisor 🎉

Dr. Brittany Elmore brings more than a decade of experience in academic advising, student services, and higher education administration. She is passionate about creating meaningful learning experiences and helping students navigate their educational journeys while empowering them to achieve their academic, personal, and professional goals.

Brittany began her career in higher education in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where she developed a passion for supporting students and contributing to the educational process. Since then, she has built a career focused on fostering student success through advising, academic affairs, and teaching.

She earned a Doctor of Education (Ed.D.) in Educational Leadership from Gratz College, where her doctoral research explored online academic spaces and student engagement in non-traditional learning environments. She also holds a Master of Business Administration from Eastern University and a Bachelor of Science in Marketing from Cheyney University of Pennsylvania, which she proudly boasts as our nation’s “First and Oldest HBCU”.

Dr. Elmore is passionate about helping students navigate academic challenges, gain clarity on their goals, and build confidence as they develop into successful professionals and lifelong learners. Her approach centers on meeting students where they are, providing thoughtful guidance, and encouraging them to recognize their own potential.

Outside of her professional work, Brittany is committed to community engagement through volunteer service and mentorship. She is a member of Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, reflecting her belief that scholarship and service extend beyond the classroom. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her cats Olivia and Oliver, tackling DIY projects, reading Toni Morrison, listening to Stevie Wonder, and unwinding with documentaries or classic episodes of The Walking Dead.

Brittany is excited to join the SASP team and Anne Arundel Community College community! She looks forward to supporting students as they pursue their educational goals and discover opportunities for growth, achievement, and lifelong success.

Today we celebrated an incredible milestone as our Bridge to Success students officially completed their summer journey and prepared for takeoff into their first semester at Anne Arundel Community College!

Our SASP team was honored to host the BTS End of Program Celebration, recognizing the hard work, growth, and perseverance of each student. From earning their "pilot wings" to celebrating alongside family, friends, and mentors, today marked the beginning of an exciting new chapter.

To our newest Riverhawks—your runway is ready, your flight plan is set, and we can't wait to watch you soar this fall. Remember, your SASP crew will be with you every step of the journey.

🎓✨ Sankofa Send-Off Celebration 2026 ✨🎓

Last Wednesday, May 6, the Black Male Institute (BMI) proudly hosted our annual Sankofa Send-Off Celebration, a powerful evening rooted in reflection, recognition, and community.

With over 45 attendees in person and additional guests joining virtually, we were honored to celebrate our students alongside AACC leadership, including President Dr. Dawn Lindsay, members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, family, and community supporters.

This special tradition recognizes our students as they take the next step in their journey—whether graduating, transferring, joining the armed services, or pursuing new opportunities. Grounded in the meaning of *Sankofa*—to look back and move forward—we honored not just where they’re going, but the strength, growth, and resilience that brought them here.

A highlight of the evening included the presentation of Kente stoles, symbolizing legacy, achievement, and the continuation of each student’s story as they were inducted into the BMI Alumni Network. Students received a certificate and gift bag as a token of appreciation.

We also took time to honor Dr. Lindsay for her exceptional leadership and lasting impact on AACC as she prepares for retirement—an especially meaningful moment for our community.

🎉 Celebrating the Crosby Scholars! 🎉

On Wednesday, May 6, SASP proudly joined in celebrating the Crosby Marketing Scholar End-of-Year Celebration, held in the CADE Multipurpose Room with nearly 30 attendees.

The afternoon began with inspiring welcome remarks from Scholar Advisor Dr. Curtis Spencer and AACC President Dr. Dawn Lindsay, setting the tone for a meaningful celebration of student achievement, partnership, and growth.

Scholars had the opportunity to showcase their year-long projects, developed in collaboration with their mentors from Crosby Marketing Communications. For the first time in the program’s history, the cohort also completed a collaborative group project, highlighting the power of teamwork and innovation.

The event was filled with fellowship, connection, and reflection among scholars, mentors, faculty, and staff. Mr. Raymond Crosby shared his appreciation for the continued partnership with AACC and SASP and announced that the program will continue for another year—an exciting milestone for future scholars.

Closing remarks from SASP Director Rayna Simon emphasized the importance of community, collaboration, and continued partnership in creating transformative opportunities for our students.

A special thank you to Dr. Curtis Spencer for his vision, leadership, and commitment to student success. Through intentional design and accessible learning outcomes, scholars gained resume-ready leadership skills and real-world experience that will carry them forward.

👏🏾 This year’s cohort exemplified what the Crosby Experience is all about—excellence, growth, and preparation for future leadership.

✨ The Spring Forum Breakfast did what it always does—bring the energy, the connection, and the community. One of the most beloved traditions of POSCH, and this year? It absolutely delivered.
