A rare, bright orange shark has been discovered off the coast of Costa Rica and scientists say it’s the first time a shark with this unusual coloring has been found.
The shark’s vibrant orange color is caused by xanthism, a rare condition that affects pigmentation in the skin. Even more unusual? The shark also has white eyes, which researchers say may be caused by a separate condition that results in little to no melanin.

Meet Lemanja 🦈🌊 Named for the sea’s mythical queen, she’s a real tiger shark that OCEARCH has been tracking off Fernando de Noronha, Brazil since 2015, a protected marine area that’s a vital habitat for predators and prey alike.

Tiger sharks are wide-ranging apex predators with an exceptionally varied diet and serrated teeth built to cut through just about anything. And every tagged shark writes its own story: some stay close to the island and coast, others strike out into the open ocean. These different paths keep raising new questions for scientists.
