Two weeks into the semester, Schar School students were asking questions directly of Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger and Lieutenant Governor Ghazala Hashmi.

The meetings were part of an immersive day in Richmond for the Upper-Level Democracy Lab. Students explored the State Capitol, toured the Executive Mansion, and spoke with public officials and advocates about government, policy, and public service.

At last week’s Learning Communities Welcome BBQ, students spent a relaxed afternoon at Corner Pocket spending time with others in their communities and getting to know their learning community directors. There was food, plenty of conversation, and a little friendly competition in the arcade.

Congratulations to Schar School alum Dylan Morse on receiving the Democratic nomination for the Vermont House of Representatives!

During his time at the Schar School, Dylan was an active member of the community, serving as a resident assistant for the First-Year Democracy Lab Learning Community.

Reflecting on his Schar School experience, Dylan shared:

“My Schar School education was formative in my ability to understand and dissect the public policy issues facing Vermont. The rigorous academic environment on campus, along with the professional opportunities I was able to pursue during undergrad, has given me the confidence to pursue my goals beyond my four years at Mason.”

Games, lunch, and plenty of Schar School spirit! Yesterday, students, faculty, and staff gathered at the Corner Pocket for our annual Welcome Back event, held this year as part of the Schar School’s 10-year anniversary celebration.

Nearly 1,300 delegates from 88 countries gathered in Kuala Lumpur to confront some of the world’s most pressing global health security challenges. and Saskia Popescu, PhD Biodefense ’19, welcomed them.

As CEO of the Global Health Security Network, Popescu is helping experts across disciplines and borders collaborate on the detection, prevention, and control of infectious disease threats. She also conducts research at RAND and continues to shape the field’s future as an adjunct professor in the Schar School’s Biodefense Program.

Popescu credits the program with encouraging her to work across science, policy, and public health rather than limiting herself to a single area of expertise.

“The biodefense program is really the first place I felt pushed to lean into being multidisciplinary,” she said.
