Exciting news today! Sarafina laid eggs!! She’s been with Arlo for a couple years now without developing eggs after observed breeding, so I suppose my hopes had dwindled quite a bit. I saw the same breeding behavior this year, and even behavior indicating she was gravid (with eggs) but didn’t take it seriously as it usually leads to disappointment in one way or another. However, this time I should’ve “listened!”
I discovered the eggs evidently a while after they had been laid as they had begun dehydrating and shriveling. Having heard that eggs can still hatch despite experiencing less than ideal conditions, I’m still hopeful. One egg that is tucked under the rest still seems pretty good, and when candlelit they appear fertile with blood vessels visible.
The big take away from this event, though, is that Sarafina and Arlo can successfully breed and lay fertile eggs! So even if this clutch doesn’t work out, there’s REAL hope for another try!
It’s been a while since an update, and there’s a lot happening. Two big accomplishments today:
cut a hole in the back wall of the shed for the through-the-wall HVAC unit. Electrician is coming out Friday to get power to the shed, then I can finish installing dry wall and paint it before moving in the snakes.
Treated the big burms for mites after a recent infestation (infestations can happen unpredictably) and it seems like it worked! Every mite I found following the treatment was dead! I’ll monitor them closely to be sure, and retreat if necessary.
Turns out I misread the ordinance twice! Since I do educational shows with the snakes, I qualify for the permit!
I just recently moved into an incredible home in Denton. Let me explain...someone reported to Denton animal control that I have snakes; which are prohibited in Denton. Turns out I misread the ordinance. I need to rehome them so they don’t get euthanized. I’ve had one of them for 19 years and another for 15 years.
I plan to seek getting an amendment to the ordinance. I have no clue what that process will look like or how long it may take, or how successful it might be, but I can’t just give up on something I believe in so strongly.
The ideal scenario would be successfully amending the ordinance allowing me to legally own my snakes within Denton. The less perfect world scenario would mean failure and snakes are permanently rehomed.
Any help (indefinite snake-sitting/possible permanent forever home, legal help/suggestions) would be GREATLY appreciated. Feel free to PM me.

I know it’s been a while since I’ve updated anyone about the snakes, but Lady has been having ongoing problems with eggs. Almost two years ago, when lady last laid eggs, one remained inside of her.
After speaking with a local h**p vet, and trying home remedies to encourage her to push the last egg out, we decided the best option would be to allow her body to reabsorb the egg. Unfortunately, that never happened.
Recently, it became evident Lady was expecting more eggs this season. It gave me a lot of stress as I feared for any number of complications that may occur. As it seemed she was ready to lay eggs this time, I began giving her warm baths to encourage contractions.
A couple weeks ago, I walked in to the snake room and found a disgusting, hard, shriveled egg in her cage. The retained egg from two years ago!
After seeing MORE egg laying behavior, I gave her more baths. Tonight, when I checked on the snakes, I saw Lady coiled and twitching, as if she was on top of eggs. I reached in and pulled her out to give her a bath. When I pulled her, six small squishy eggs followed!!
LADY IS LAYING EGGS!
These small soft eggs are a good sign because it appears as though she CAN lay fresh eggs without complications. She’s currently bathing again to encourage her to continue laying eggs. Baths will also keep her hydrated to help prevent eggs from sticking inside her. Fingers crossed she gets them all out this time! 🤞🏻

Monstro was the last one to finish his meal today. He was really struggling getting it down his throat, but he finally managed to get some leverage.

We have all lost an amazing animal. Though Aurora is no longer with us to touch, she has forever touched all of us. She leaves an enormous hole in my heart and family, and we’ll think of her always.
We love you, Aurora.
