Since the new administration took office, there’s been a noticeable surge of anxiety in our community and across the DMV. Many of us are grappling with a sense of unease, unsure how to navigate the wave of political shifts without being consumed by them. Fundamental rights that once felt secure now feel uncertain, and the question that keeps rising to the surface is: how best to protect ourselves and our children?

At The Sycamore School, we don’t receive federal funding, which decreases our risk of being targeted by these changes. As an independent school, we have more flexibility to cultivate all aspects of our curriculum and culture to align with our values.

We take great pride in being a safe space for LGBTQ+ community. Part of our strategy includes daily check-ins during our daily morning meeting to see what’s on their minds. We talk about everything from LGBTQIA+ rights and how to have a civil debate to preferred music and pets.We also encourage our students to get involved! When the world feels overwhelming, it can be grounding to get involved in something where you feel like you’re making a difference, even in a small way. This year we encouraged our students to fundraise for their charity of choice - many of those organizations supported LGBTQ+ rights such as The Trevor Project.

At TSS, we truly believe in the importance of recess! Whether it's enjoying outdoor play or engaging in indoor games and puzzles, these breaks are essential for our students. 🌟🏃‍♂️🧩

We recently provided the opportunity to our high school students to participate in a CPR and first aid training that resulted in getting a CPR certification! 🩺✨ This hands-on experience not only equips them with invaluable life-saving skills but also boosts their confidence in emergency situations.

A huge shoutout to Mattie for successfully completing his senior capstone project! Mattie's passion for psychology inspired his capstone project—a psychological study that let him finally dive into a subject he’d always wanted to explore deeper at TSS. His focus on fear and phobias grew from his own experiences, making the project personal, meaningful, and grounded in research. Congrats again on a wonderful capstone!
