On March 7, 1965, approximately 600 people, led by Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity Brothers John R. Lewis and Hosea Williams, crossed the Edmund Pettus Bridge to begin the “Selma to Montgomery” march for voting rights. State troopers violently attacked the peaceful demonstrators on a day known as Bloody Sunday.
The men of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. stand united behind a theme of “Empowering Generations of Men to BELIEVE in Advocacy, Community Service, and Engagement.” The goal is for our members to be socially conscious, community-focused brothers, who will lead and be a voice for change, equality, equity, and justice. As a Brotherhood, we have consistently stood on the frontlines for social justice for 109 years and we will continue to be servant leaders and staunch supporters for “equitable rights for all.”
Remembering the legacy of our brother, Hon. John Lewis, is something that is important to the value of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. As a brotherhood, we will continue to honor Hon. Bro. John Lewis each year. That is why we are proud to once again, be part of “3 Days of Good Trouble,” March 3-5, 2023, honoring the 58th anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery march and the Voting Rights Act of 1965.
