It’s been a long time coming but I finally planted my free ! It’s been sitting inside and occasionally it dried out too much so the newer leaves are a little sad. If you haven’t planted yours - and this goes for all trees you plant - scrape away the top layer of soil to be sure you are not covering the base/root flare. Since mine has been indoors for a bit, I’m keeping him in a semi shaded spot until he’s acclimated. The plan is to give him a few months and plant him in the yard this fall when he’ll have more roots and be more likely to survive. Plus, fall is the best time to plant trees as they’ll have a few seasons to just focus on growing roots before they have to think about flowers and leaves and deal with summer stress.
How is your ? I hope we can get this hashtag going and check in with our trees every now and then! Tag so we can see how everyone’s tree is doing!
or does anyone remember which vendor was giving away the baby redbuds?

Love this tribute to an amazing architect!
Maya Lin was a senior at Yale when she won a design competition for the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington D.C. While the competition itself was anonymous, when Lin, a Chinese-American woman, was identified as the winner, there were vocal critics of her design including veterans, the media, the art world, politicians, and even the Secretary of the Interior. All controversy surrounding the design disappeared with the completion of the Memorial in 1982 as it quickly became a site of healing, attracting friends and family of those lost, and is today one of the most popular sites on the National Mall and an inspiration for memorial designs around the world.

This is awesome! One of our recent grads wrote her thesis on bird sounds and the benefits for dementia patients and it’s great to hear that Scotland is opening outdoor areas to help people with dementia.

Cragrats Dr. Ozdil!
Congratulations to Taner R. Özdil, the 2022 CELA TRIAD Award Winner!
Taner R. Özdil is Associate Professor, Landscape Architecture, at the University of Texas at Arlington. Özdil says, “I have developed scholarly interests in exploring the ambiguities of both the theoretical and professional underpinnings of design and planning disciplines. My academic explorations are evidence-based, systematic, and interdisciplinary inquiries that are deeply rooted in the scholarship and the education of landscape architecture and urban design, and physical planning fields. More specifically my research, professional, and creative activities cover urban landscapes and urban design with an emphasis on resiliency, sustainability, and green design practices. I examine the relationship between design and value (economic, environmental, social, cultural, aesthetic, etc.) within the built environment through evaluation and performance studies specifically in urban areas and metropolitan regions.” Read the full profile: https://www.uta.edu/academics/faculty/profile?username=tozdil
