St.

Thomas More Cathedral School (STM) (PreK - 8th Grade): the Bishop's own school, the oldest Catholic school in Arlington, VA, and one with a long history of academic & religious excellence! Our Mission is to partner with families to nurture and develop the spiritual, academic, social and emotional promise of each child in accordance with the teaching of the Catholic Church, rooted in Gospel values and led by examples of the Master Teacher, Jesus Christ.

You would think 2nd Graders, making “reading forts” out of desks and blankets on the third to last day of school would be loud, but our 2nd Graders were exceptional and appreciated the special treatment, as a reward for finishing the curriculum early. (200 school days and an unknown number of lessons, projects, and tests, and this will likely be the longest-lasting memory of 2nd Grade. Thank you Mr. Biehler and Mrs. Vargas!)

When you open your yearbooks, you will see a nice dedication to Mr. Frank Savich (Facility Manager for both the Cathedral and STM), Mrs. Sandra Garcia (Daytime Cleaning Woman), and Mrs. Reyna Orellana (Afternoon Cleaning Woman). These three work tirelessly to keep the school running. Please consider having your children thank them in person, write them a note, or give them a card. (Mr. Savich was not available for a picture, as he was likely lifting something heavy, working on an HVAC, or preparing for the end of school.)

Congratulations to STM’s Class of 2026, who are officially high schoolers! There is a large group going to Bishop O’Connell High School, several going to Bishop Ireton & Gonzaga High Schools, a couple graduates going to St. Stephen’s & St. Agnes, and several going to Catholic high schools out of state. Congratulations to those who were in National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) and Student Government and all the parents! Some parents have been driving their graduate to STM since August 2016!

Class 2026 has left STM for the last time! There was a lot of yearbook singing, hugging, a little crying, and a lot of cheering. STM lined the hallways to “clap them out” to a group of awaiting parents.

3rd Grade was busy today getting signatures from students (and some staff) on their petition to extend the children’s 20-minute lunch. This effort culminated with an end-of-day negotiation with Principal LaBarge. The students held firm that they were not willing to give up any of their preceding 20-minute recess, nor were they interested in extending the school day. Principal LaBarge said she would take in under advisement, but explained that any extension would have to come from something else. 3rd Grade did not strike nor walk out, but felt heard and returned to class.

Our Resource Teachers (Mrs. Rimicci, Mrs. Anderson, & Mrs. Bussey), who do amazing work for our students all school year long, celebrated the first year of STM’s Peer Mentor Program with a pizza & popsicle party for middle schoolers and their mentees.
