A big thank you to everyone who attended our Welcome Back Bash in CPB and to all who worked behind the scenes to make it such a successful start to Fall 2026! Lots of swag and sweet treats were handed out, and many of our science student orgs were on hand to welcome visitors and let them know how they can get involved. We look forward to seeing everyone at more of our upcoming events this semester!

🌧️ Ever wondered why the smell of rain feels so refreshing?

That fresh, earthy scent after rainfall has a name: petrichor.

When raindrops hit dry soil, they release compounds from plants and soil bacteria into the air, creating the distinctive scent many of us associate with the first rain. And our noses can detect it in incredibly small amounts!

A simple rainy day is a fascinating reminder that science is happening all around us. 🔬🌱

What’s your favorite thing about the smell of rain?

What did you do this summer? UTA biology major Isabelle Burns spent hers making waves in the Northeast!

As an NSF REU fellow with the University of Rhode Island Plastics Initiative, Isabelle spent 10 weeks investigating how carbon nanotube sensors react to different microplastics. From hands-on training in nanomaterials and spectroscopy to sharing her findings at symposiums, she gained incredible real-world research experience!

But it wasn’t all lab work, "This summer has allowed me to grow both as a scientist and as a person," Isabelle shared. She spent her downtime exploring Rhode Island, NYC, and Boston, visiting museums, and connecting with researchers from across the country.

We love seeing our students represent UTA and the College of Science so beautifully. Swipe to see snippets from her amazing summer! ✨➡️
