So, occasionally I am asked, "How long does it take to become and Intermediate Practitioner of Tai Chi(Ji) Chuan?" And I find that I need to be reminded, as well.
So, here is a fuzzy idea of a possible time-line:
First, attend a minimum of 7-8 public beginner classes, though for many, 16 or more might be about right. Second, enroll in weekday morning classes. By the end of 4-5 months of weekday classes and regular attendance at the public beginner classes, students will have performed the Yang 108 Long Form, more than several times. Third, continue to attend all these classes and polish and memorize the Long Form as well as learn various other TCC exercises and other Qi Gong(Chi Kung). It may take a bit longer in many cases, but the student will have become an Intermediate Beginner along the way. Fourth, the path to Advanced Beginner may take quite a bit longer, but is full of adventure. Fifth, Intermediate Practitioner of TCC is a realm without known borders, but in general, the Intermediate Practitioners are qualified to teach a lot of TCC and Qi Gong, while still considering themselves to be students. Sixth, Advanced Practitioners are rare. Even Beginner Advanced Practitioners are rare. Advanced Practitioners have put aside the quest for enlightenment and swim in it. Seventh, Masters only occur when Collective Consciousness names them Masters.
So we've all got a lot to look forward to, right?
Because of my experience with local weather, I will not decide until the last minute about class tomorrow. If it rains at my house I will still go to 201 E. Abram St. and see how that is. If drizzling, I still will plan on practice. Cheers!
