Contrary to what many think, May 5th is not Mexican Independence Day. Mexico’s independence is celebrated on September 16th. The celebration of “Cinco de Mayo” commemorates the “Battle of Puebla” (May 5, 1862) in which Mexican forces, against all odds, defeated the French intervention forces of Napoleon III and forced them to retreat. To read Francisco Macías' blog, "Cinco de Mayo is Not Mexican Independence Day?," originally published in 2011 in "In Custodia Legis: Law Librarians of Congress," see https://go.usa.gov/xQKkU?loclr=fbint
