Registration is open for the second international edition of the online Summer Certificate Course on Combating Transnational Organized Crime and Illicit Trade: A Focus on the Americas, which will be held from 31 July to 10 August 2023 and convened by the University for Peace (UPEACE), in partnership with the Terrorism, Transnational Crime and Corruption Center (TraCCC) and the Anti-Illicit Trade Institute (AITI) at George Mason University. The main objective of the course is to identify how different types of crimes impact the capacity of the state to manage and mitigate internal and external threats. Geared to professionals and graduate students, the course aims to improve comprehension of the dynamics of transnational organized crime, focusing on corruption, money laundering, illicit trade, criminalized hubs and free trade zones, environmental crime, state fragility, and the UN Sustainable Development Goals (Agenda 2030). Through class sessions and group work, participants will examine organized crime from a more nuanced crime convergence perspective, specifically as an aspect of social conflict, emphasizing that the challenges for promoting peace are embedded in local, regional, and global contexts. Students will receive a certificate upon successful completion of this highly-regarded international course and earn 1 academic credit. The cost of the course is USD 500 to be submitted to UPEACE.
What participants said about the 2022 Summer Certificate Course:
"The course was well thought out, and the speakers delivered informative and well-articulated presentations on their topics."
“I found the group activity to be very helpful for synthesizing the information we looked at...”
