In Ethiopia, meals are shared from a communal plate, eaten by hand using injera to scoop up stews of lentils, greens, and spiced meats. It's one of the small daily rituals that shapes how people connect, and the kind of detail that separates a textbook learner from someone who can actually navigate a room.
Our blog looks at wellness in Ethiopia and the cultural practices behind it.

DLS Thai classes recently celebrated Songkran (the Thai New Year) known for its traditions of renewal, blessings, and joyful water rituals. Students, instructors, and staff enjoyed traditional cooking, karaoke, a Muay Thai demonstration, and the heartfelt Dum Hua ceremony, in which water is gently poured over elders' hands as a sign of respect. The day ended with a playful water gun fight, echoing Songkran's beloved water-splashing customs.
Experiences like these reflect the cultural immersion woven into every DLS language program. Learn more about our immersive language and cultural training at www.dlsdc.com.

Our latest Tech Tuesday episode is here. Building on last week's lesson on using AI to design listening tasks, this installment focuses on the lesson's bookends: pre-listening and post-listening activities.
We walk through two prompts, one that generates warm-ups, key vocabulary, and prediction tasks to activate prior knowledge before students hit play, and another that creates personal response, real-life application, and critical thinking activities to deepen learning after the audio ends. Each prompt also produces teacher notes with suggested answers, giving instructors a complete, structured lesson from a single transcript.

Happy Teacher Appreciation Day! Today is an opportunity to honor the educators who shape minds, bridge cultures, and inspire lifelong learning.
In many languages, the word for "teacher" carries deep cultural weight — in Japanese, sensei means "one who has come before," while in Arabic, ustadh conveys both mastery and respect. At Diplomatic Language Services, we are profoundly grateful for our team of native-speaking instructors, whose linguistic expertise and cultural insight turn every lesson into a window into another world.

Order a cappuccino in Italy after 11 am, and you've outed yourself as a tourist. In Saudi Arabia, your host keeps refilling your cup until you tilt it to say you're done. In Ethiopia, the traditional coffee ceremony can last up to two hours.
Our blog explores four coffee traditions and what each says about the culture behind it.

In Episode 7 of our Tech Tuesday series, we explore how AI can transform a single audio transcript into a complete set of listening tasks for language learners.
Using a short clip on social media and information, we walk through two structured prompts: one designed for the first listen to capture the main idea, and a second for deeper comprehension through a gap-fill exercise. The episode also shares practical tips for adjusting difficulty levels, varying task types, and generating teacher notes, giving instructors a flexible framework that works across any language they teach.

Happy Earth Day from Diplomatic Language Services! 🌎
Today, some of our team headed out to care for our adopted stretch of highway, a tradition we proudly uphold twice a year as part of our Corporate Social Responsibility commitment.
Just as language learning connects people across cultures, caring for our shared environment connects us to our community. Every piece of litter collected is a small step toward a cleaner, more sustainable world, and a reflection of the values that guide us at DLS, both in and out of the classroom.
A huge thank you to our team members who gave their time today!

Tech Tuesday, Episode 6 focuses on creating real-life speaking role-plays with AI.
This episode shows a simple prompt that generates a ready-to-use speaking activity with authentic details, two roles, clear task instructions, and useful phrases. The example scenario is a hotel check-in for a business trip. We also show how to revise the same scenario for advanced learners by adding more detail, longer interaction, and problems to solve.
Try it: pick a real-life situation and generate a role-play. Then adjust the prompt for a different proficiency level.
