10 reasons to play the piano 12/19/2025

Most people don’t stop playing piano because they don’t love music.
They stop because no one ever explained why it matters beyond lessons and exams.
This post on Melody Spanswick’s blog does a lovely job of putting words to what music actually gives us — for children and adults. Sharing in case it resonates.

10 reasons to play the piano There are so many reasons why both adults and children benefit from the study of a musical instrument. Here are my top ten, to encourage you to learn to play the piano: 1. Music brings us all…

During recital week I kept thinking about how much courage it takes for kids to sit at the piano and try.
I wrote a short piece about why piano lessons often become one of those gifts that lasts longer than toys—supporting focus, confidence, and emotional growth long after the holidays are over.

We love seeing more conversations about the science of early music learning.
But here’s the thing: it’s not enough to know music helps the brain — kids need a space where they can actually experience it.
That’s why Piano Playground exists.
It’s our modern piano atelier where children learn real piano skills through movement, imagination, rhythm, and beautifully structured play.
Not more practice charts. Not more pressure. Just the real stuff that builds musicianship for life.
A spark becomes a habit.
A habit becomes a musician. ✨

Music is one of the strongest tools for early brain growth. Children learn best through sound, rhythm, and movement, and these experiences build important pathways in the developing mind. Music supports thinking skills long before homework can make a difference.

Researchers found that even one year of music lessons can raise a child’s IQ in a meaningful way. The combination of rhythm, listening, and coordination activates many parts of the brain at the same time. This activity strengthens memory, focus, and problem solving.

When children clap, sing, or explore simple instruments, their brain becomes more flexible. These moments train attention and pattern recognition, which help with reading and learning later. Music also supports emotional growth by giving children a safe way to express feelings.

Parents may think music is only a hobby, but science shows it is a powerful form of training. It teaches timing, patience, and listening, skills that shape strong thinking habits. These lessons help the brain grow in ways that worksheets cannot.

Offering music in daily life, even through simple songs or steady beats, supports healthy development. With time and practice, children gain confidence and sharper thinking, showing how deeply music guides the mind during early growth.

Before you play anything, play something fun.
A silly warm-up, a glissando, a dramatic chord—whatever lights the spark.
Joy first → focus follows. 🎹🔥
