The U.S. Department of Energy has proposed $10 million in funding for seven projects focused on recovering and refining critical minerals, including heavy rare earths, gallium and copper.

The early stage R&D projects will explore new approaches to mineral extraction and recovery, including the use of industrial byproducts and end of life materials. The initiative is part of broader federal efforts to expand domestic critical mineral processing, recycling and manufacturing capacity.

The Department of Defense has paused Phase 2 of the Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification (CMMC) program while it reviews potential changes to the requirements. For defense contractors, however, the pause does not eliminate existing cybersecurity obligations.
