Responding to our children (and to each other) in a respectful and kind manner is the resounding message of being seen.
“If a child’s own needs were taken into account, every healthy child would be cheerful and calm.”
Dr Emmi Pikler
Dr. Emmi Pikler (1902 - 1984) was a paediatrician renown for her ground breaking care of babies and children, both in families ,and in full time residential care. She and her team observed that when the babies' and childrens's needs were reponded to, the children were peaceful and calm, even in an orphanage. Her discoveries about infant natural, unassisted motor development influenced the medical profession's understanding of babies and children's physical unfolding. To my mind, her contribution to the wellbeing of babies (especially) and children is a gift of genius.
