Today, April 29, is recognized as the fifth annual National Fentanyl Awareness Day. This is an annual, coordinated day to focus on educating youth, parents, and educators about the risks of illicit fentanyl.
Fentanyl is a synthetic opioid 50 times stronger than he**in and 100 times stronger than morphine.
We would like to share in raising awareness about the dangers of illicit fentanyl and to promote, educate, and save lives. Founded by families impacted by the crisis, this day brings together community organizations, schools, law enforcement, and health agencies to fight the leading cause of overdose deaths in the U.S.
Key 2026 Focus: Protecting Young People
Data shows that from 2020–2024, 75% of youth overdose deaths (ages 10–19) involved fentanyl.
Nearly half of teens are unaware that fake prescription pills often contain lethal doses of fentanyl.
