Two fatalities are confirmed in a major crash on I-30 involving two 18-wheelers at the Gum Springs exit, westbound lane. Just after 12:30 PM, an eastbound trucker crossed the median and struck a westbound 18-wheeler, the sheriff says. The drivers of both vehicles perished in the crash.
Sheriff says it is NOT a hazmat crash. Sheriff tells us there was zero visibility due to the smoke, and multiple explosions went off. A hazmat team from Little Rock was en route to the scene, but was called off.
At about 1:20 PM the eastbound lane was reopened. Westbound traffic was being diverted at the 73 mile marker.
2:30 PM: A Veolia spokesperson confirmed neither load was en route to or from the company’s hazardous waste treatment facility; the plant was closed in observance of the Veterans Day holiday.
3 PM: An iDriveArkansas map showed the westbound lanes at a standstill from the crash to the Friendship exit, about 15 miles north of the scene. Diverted interstate traffic also clogged US Highway 67 between Caddo Valley and Arkadelphia.
By 3:30 PM, tow trucks were beginning the process of removing the wreckage from the roadway. The sheriff did not have an estimate on how long the road would be shut.
4:30 PM: The highway was reopened.
