Archives generally hold documents -- paper, photographic, digital, analog -- whereas museums hold three-dimensional objects (aka artifacts). Sometimes, though, the lines get blurred, especially in University Archives, which may be responsible for maintaining memorabilia for the institution. One of our University Archivist's favorite objects is the 1934 Homecoming dress of Mary Ellen Lindvall, Ouachita's "Football Queen."

The dress is made of crushed blue velvet fabric with a beaded collar and belt (not shown here). Lindvall, a native of Malvern, Arkansas, attended Ouachita for three years before transferring to Texas State Women's College where she obtained her degree in Home Economics. In 1941, she married Blytheville High School football coach Joseph L. Dildy. Mrs. Dildy passed away in 2004 at the age of 88.

The 1935 Ouachitonian yearbook included this photo of Lindvall wearing the same dress that is now preserved in the OBU Archives.

One of our University Archivist's favorite items in the archives is this scrapbook from 1893. The "Herbarium" of A. H. Biscoe, as it is labeled, is a collection of cuttings of flowers and plants found around Ouachita College and Arkadelphia.

Alexander Hamilton "Hamp" Biscoe was a student at the college and a resident of Arkadelphia. His mother, Nancy Caroline ("Nannie") Biscoe, a widow, brought her five children to Arkadelphia around 1889 and built a house at 227 Cherry Street.

The scrapbook contains over 30 species of plants, including Corn Mallow, Flowering Dogwood, Pansy, Evening Primrose, False Indigo, Partridgeberry, Larkspur, Jack-in-the-Pulpit and more. Each sample is accompanied by its taxonomy, and for many, also the date and place where Biscoe took the cutting.

Following his graduation from Ouachita College, Biscoe left Arkadelphia to pursue medical studies in Memphis and St. Louis. After earning his Doctor of Medicine degree, he practiced in Louisiana and Mississippi until his death in 1925.

Colonel James Lemuel Blakeney (1887-1950) was a 1916 graduate of Ouachita College and a chaplain in the United States Army for 32 years. Blakeney documented his college and military experiences in photographs. The four albums in his collection, three of which are shown here, contain approximately 450 images of Ouachita College, Col. Blakeney's service in the Mexican Expedition (1916-1917), and his service in Europe during World War I.

For more information about Col. Blakeney's life and his collection, see link in the first comment.

October is National Information Literacy Awareness Month!

Established by presidential proclamation in 2009, NILAM is near to the heart of librarians! A big part of what we do as academic librarians is to help students become more savvy consumers of information. This involves teaching the skills to find and evaluate information, use information to expand their knowledge base, and enhance their ability to be discerning and responsible members of society. Want more information? Email a librarian today to schedule an individual appointment or a class visit!

The Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) also has a number of helpful resources to help you become a more informed consumer of information. Link in the first comment!

In 1999, the Society of American Archivists officially designated October as American Archives Month. Archives across the country use the occasion to increase public awareness of historical records and their preservation, as well as highlight the work that goes into the care of these valuable records. Throughout October, the OBU Library will be sharing glimpses into its archives and highlighting some of our favorite collections.
