This year, thus far nine people have tragically lost their lives in lightning strike events.

In a study by the NFPA and National Fire Incident Reporting System (NFIRS), the following findings about “lightning-caused” fires stand out.

Notably, lightning-caused fires “dollar loss per fire is nearly twice that from all U.S. fires.”

Two-thirds of lightning fires occur in the period June through August.

Roofs, sidewalls, framing, and electrical wires are the areas most ignited by lightning fires.

As grim as these statistics are, remember:

This Friday, we take a hardhat off to Renee Landers, the United Lightning Protection Association, and the ULPA Apprenticeship Program Renee cofounded.

Summer just feels like the perfect time.

With young and once young people everywhere seeking internships, apprenticeships provide the same mentorship and an exceedingly direct path to professional employment.

One thing we know for sure, AI doesn’t install, inspect, service, or maintain lightning protection systems. And AI doesn’t think to grow the next generation of professionals or advance 𝘰𝘶𝘳 industry.
Renee and the ULPA did.
