The 6th Grade Volleyball Club at Upper Adams Intermediate School is officially underway! Twenty-four enthusiastic students signed up to arrive at school early to learn the fundamentals of volleyball, develop new skills, and have fun with their classmates.

A special thank-you to Rachel Hertzog, Justine Irwin, and Deborah Yargar-Reed for volunteering their time and sharing their enthusiasm for volleyball with our students. We appreciate their dedication to providing opportunities for our Canners to learn, grow, and stay active beyond the regular school day!

We look forward to seeing these young athletes continue to develop their skills and teamwork throughout the club!

Artist in Residence at UAIS
This year's Artist-in-Residence, Jenny Hill, provided 4th grade students with an immersive circus arts experience that has been generously funded by the Cultural Alliance of York, the Upper Adams Intermediate School PTO, and the Canner Foundation. Over the course of the 10-day residency, students explored the art of circus performance while discovering how performers use movement, comedy, storytelling, and physical skills to entertain an audience and create a sense of wonder. They learned that the circus is not only about mastering these skills, but also about the rich history behind them. The final showcase took place on the evening of Wednesday, September 23rd.

Patriot Day at UAIS

On Friday our UAIS students and staff took time to recognize Patriot Day, a day dedicated to remembering the nearly 3,000 innocent lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honoring the bravery and selflessness of the first responders, military members, and everyday citizens who came together during one of our nation's most difficult moments.

At UAIS, we want our students to understand the importance of remembering history while also recognizing the values that bring us together as a community—kindness, compassion, courage, respect, and service to others.

Canner C.A.R.E.S. in Action!
During the first few weeks of school, our teachers review the expectations of our CANNER C.A.R.E.S. Positive Behavior Program. Mrs. Hertzog recently introduced these important expectations in a creative and engaging way!

She read aloud the book "Do Unto Otters" to help students learn more about respect and good manners. Each student then shared one way they can demonstrate respect at school and created a fun “Polaroid” picture to accompany their idea.

Students also worked collaboratively in groups to create posters demonstrating examples of accountability in different areas of the school. Each group proudly presented its poster and ideas to the class.

We are proud of our students as they continue learning how to demonstrate Cooperation, Accountability, Respect, and the other important qualities that make up a CANNER who C.A.R.E.S!

Race for Education Kick-Off

On Friday, October 2nd, UAIS will participate in our 12th Annual Race for Education! This is an exciting tradition at our school and a wonderful opportunity for our students, staff, families, and community to come together to support our students.

We officially kicked off this year's Race for Education on August 24th with a school-wide assembly. We were excited to welcome Eddie, our Race for Education mascot, who helped make the event even more fun! Eddie brought popcorn for our students to enjoy and encouraged them to work hard to earn our Movie and Popcorn Party reward!

Our school-wide goal this year is to raise $20,000, and we know our Canner community can make it happen! Students will earn a DJ Dance party if our goal is reached. Every label returned and every donation received brings us one step closer. The funds raised through the Race for Education directly support our students and help provide opportunities and resources that enhance their school experience.

Students are encouraged to fill out the mailing labels provided and return them to school. Labels are due back to school by Friday, September 4th.

Let's work together, set our sights on our $20,000 goal, and show what our Canner community can accomplish! Every student, every family, and every contribution makes a difference. Let's make this year's Race for Education our best one yet!
