The Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program course held its closing ceremony on Wednesday, April 15 at the Santa Rosa Correctional Institution. Fourteen UWF students took a course on criminal justice topics this semester, meeting each week with fifteen incarcerated men from the prison. The students received certificates and listened to guest speakers from the Florida Coalition for Higher Education in Prison.

The course is led by Jennifer L. Brinkley, Associate Professor of Legal Studies Pre-Law.

Programs like the Inside-Out Prison Exchange Program are creating classrooms where learning is shared across lived experiences. Inside and outside students sit side by side, building understanding, dignity, and connection through education.

For many justice-impacted learners, this isn’t just about earning credits—it’s about rediscovering self-worth, finding purpose, and imagining a future that once felt out of reach. And the impact is real: education in these spaces has been shown to significantly reduce return rates and open pathways forward.

This is what happens when we center humanity in education. When we create spaces to learn with each other, not apart from one another, transformation follows.
