October is Filipino American History Month.

Community organizer and Tennessee State Representative Justin Jones will speak on "Youth-led Movements and the Future of Democracy" in this pre-election public talk, 5pm Thursday, Oct. 8, in Goodwin Forum at Cal Poly Humboldt.

Originally from Oakland, Justin Jones is the grandson of Black, working-class grandparents from the South Side of Chicago who moved from Tennessee during the Great Migration, and Filipino immigrants who migrated to California during WWII and the US war in Vietnam. Rep. Jones came to national attention when he was expelled from the Tennessee legislature for supporting a gun reform protest in 2023. He is currently in the national news protesting his state's redistricting scheme. Drawing from his own experience organizing as a student and confronting power as one of the youngest lawmakers in Tennessee history, Justin explores what it means to lead with purpose, navigate backlash, and build community-rooted coalitions. The future of our democracy and this planet depends upon young people -- join us for this urgent and inspiring talk.
