Honoring Juneteenth ❤️💛💚

Today we celebrate Juneteenth, commemorating June 19, 1865, when enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued. Juneteenth is both a celebration of freedom and a reminder that justice and equality often require continued advocacy and action.

For social workers, Juneteenth reflects our commitment to advancing human rights, challenging systemic inequities, and supporting communities in the pursuit of self-determination and liberation. As we honor this day, we also recognize the ongoing work needed to create a more just and equitable society for all.

🎉 Congratulations to Michelle Bates-Hoaglin (MSW, LCSW) on her appointment as Assistant Professor & MSW Director in Cal Poly Humboldt’s Department of Social Work!

Michelle’s connection to our program spans more than two decades. Since 2005, she has taught in both the BSW and MSW programs while helping strengthen relationships with Tribal communities throughout Northern California through her leadership with the Pathway and SERVE projects. Her work has expanded social work internships in Tribal organizations and helped advance curriculum focused on Indigenous communities and Tribal social work practice.

As she steps into this tenure-track faculty role and continues her leadership as MSW Director, we celebrate her enduring commitment to our students, our program, and the communities we serve.

Please join us in congratulating Michelle on this well-deserved achievement! 👏

What an incredible celebration of learning, mentorship, and community! 🎉

Our Practicum Reception was a wonderful opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of our social work students in their community placements, while also honoring the mentor supervisors who make these learning experiences possible through their guidance and support. We are so grateful to everyone who joined us to celebrate this important milestone.

A special thank you to the Jefferson Community Center for providing a beautiful venue and delicious food that helped make the evening so memorable.

We were also proud to recognize our Alumni of the Year, William Feather, whose inspiring speech left a lasting impact on everyone in attendance.

In addition, we are excited to celebrate the success of our first annual Regional Practicum Reception in Moreno Valley, CA, created to honor and connect with our non-local students and community partners. We look forward to continuing this meaningful tradition in the years ahead!
