I don't usually go too public with my feelings about HSU and its destruction of CICD, ITEPP and INRSEP, but I just read HSU's FAQ regarding the student's occupation of the Native American Forum. I have a lot of thoughts about what I read, mostly though I wish to point out that there is no longer an ITEPP or INRSEP no matter what anyone thinks. Those were hard monied, State budgeted, fully staffed, dedicated stand alone programs with discrete missions to serve American Indians students. Period. Funding a Native American Center for Academic Excellence is NOT the same as funding an ITEPP. Funding a STEM Center is NOT the same as funding INRSEP. We won't even go into budget formulas etc, but CICD, ITEPP and INRSEP's budgets were dedicated dollars to the CSU. Historically each program sometimes served a very limited few non-Indian students it was at each directors discretion AND it was clearly understood those students were exceptions who met specific criteria. Also HSU is searching for a STEM Center for Academic Excellence director NOT an INRSEP director- look it up on the HSU HR site. Do not be bamboozled. Unfortunately, I do not believe these stellar programs will be resurrected.

THIS IS A VERY LONG MESSAGE

Wow!! Not sure what's up, but CICD has recently had a lot of new "likes".

I miss CICD everyday- not just for myself, but because it was a very dynamic, responsive program for almost 50 years. Responsive 1st and foremost to Native communities and their goals as defined by their own authority. CICD was unique as the ONLY fully State funded, hard monied program any where in existence with a mission to serve and support Native driven community development. Over the decades, under every director, CICD was consistently successful in bringing in grants to increase it's State budget to complement its business as usual, including first and foremost CICD's 40 year effort to revitalize California Indian languages.

Anyway, CICD is gone now. HSU closed it on July 1, 2013 and reallocated its funding to some other campus need or vision. I still contend that is the same day they closed INRSEP and ITEPP as dedicated programs for Indian people and communities. As far as I can tell there are no longer any "Indian" programs on campus. But I'm gone, left when the program closed after making sure the language tapes and records were safe guarded. That's what I want to draw attention to- Go! to the HSU Library's Special Collections and get copies of the language recordings from CICD archives. Use them please! Do not let them lie fallow!

In 1966, Humboldt State University (HSU) established the Center for Community Development (CCD) to provide services and outreach to American Indian communities in Indian Country on behalf of HSU. The name was changed to the Center for Indian Community Development (CICD) in 1991.

For those of you who are wondering why there have been no recent posts from CICD, just a reminder: HSU closed the center for Indian Community Development in July 2013 after 50 highly successful years in supporting Indian communities in their pursuits and projects. After re-envisioning its services to Native peoples and students, HSU closed the doors of CICD and its sister program the Center for Indian Economic Development. It made fundamental and deep changes to the ITEPP & INRSEP missions and focus. INRSEP still exists, but is now under a larger umbrella of services to all students of color in the sciences Of the four HSU programs dedicated solely to Native students and communities only one remains: ITEPP.
