Tips & Tricks to Apply for a County Job
Applying for a new job is exciting and a bit scary! Keep in mind that you’re already taking a great step by exploring your career options. One important thing to know is that applying for a public sector job, like a position with the County of Humboldt, works a little differently than applying for a private company. Here are some helpful tips from the Humboldt County Human Resources Department to set you up for success:
When applying for a job with the County of Humboldt, your job application is the star of the show. Unlike many private sector jobs, the focus here is on your application itself, rather than your cover letter or resume. Focus your energy there!
Don’t be shy, share details and examples. Most County of Humboldt job applications include a job-specific supplemental questionnaire. This is your chance to shine, so be thorough and descriptive with your answers. Humboldt County Human Resources wants to know everything relevant about your skills and experience. There’s no need to keep it short. The more you share, the better picture the county gets of what you bring to the table.
Be patient with the process, it’s worth it! Some, but not all, positions with the County of Humboldt require extensive background checks and even a pre-employment physical, which means the hiring process can take a few weeks or even a few months. That’s completely normal, so hang in there!
