Cal Poly Humboldt’s “Baduwa’t Baddies” had the honor of participating in the ASCE MidPac competition hosted by San Jose State University.

Our team took 4th place out of 10 in the water quality competition!! The team had such a great time exploring San Jose, meeting students from other schools, and participating in the competition.

The MidPac class would like to give their special thanks to advisor Elise Culbertson, Colin Wingfield, SJSU, ASCE, our local ASCE chapter, and their sponsors, Maas and Russo LLP, and Water One. Additional thanks to Taylor Bell, Zander Leigh, Claire Ingvoldsen, and Drew Rodriguez for acting as judges in the local competition.

Join us on for a luncheon with our guests Jorge Luis Zavala Alvarez and Jorge Luis Gomez Lopez, both students at Tecnológico de Monterrey in Mexico City. Together, they have created Freenergy, a climate-tech startup that utilizes piezoelectric technology to convert vehicular flow into clean energy and urban data.

Luncheon at:

📍Alistair McCrone Hall 006
🕐 12-1pm
🥯 Catered by Los Bagels

Freenergy has earned significant national and international recognition from organizations such as Ford México, Xignux Challenge, and Climatón UNAM, and has received technical validation from experts at MIT, UNAM, and Tecnológico de Monterrey. Zavala Álvarez, a dual-degree student in Mechatronics and Electrical Engineering, and Gómez López, an Industrial and Systems Engineering student, have accelerated the venture through prestigious international programs like the Start Fellowship in Switzerland. Beyond their technological innovation, the founders demonstrate strong social and leadership commitment through initiatives like Financito, kidney health awareness campaigns, and the student organization Fórmula Cinemática. Currently, the startup is advancing toward institutional pilot implementations and has been featured across various media outlets. We hope to see you there!!

we are raising funds for the Engineering Internship Experience Fund, which will support the hiring of a dedicated, part-time Internship Coordinator. This role will focus on building relationships with industry partners, expanding internship opportunities, and ensuring that students across all engineering majors can access meaningful, paid placements. By strengthening these connections, we can open doors for more students to gain practical experience while also deepening partnerships with employers who value Cal Poly Humboldt talent.

With Giving Day on April 8, there is an exciting opportunity to amplify your impact. Thanks to a generous $5,000 matching gift from SHN Consulting Engineers & Geologists, Inc., every donation will go even further in supporting internship access for our students. Your contribution helps create transformative opportunities, empowering the next generation of engineers with the experience and connections they need to thrive.
