Color can be kind of scary and intimidating if you’re not used to using it in your work. That’s why for the December art challenge I’m using preset color palettes and talking about how to apply them. This is an analogous color palette with some warm accents to draw focus. If you look up basic set composition shapes, there are these older Penkin illustrations that illustrate nearly all of them that are easily googlable. Some of the main ones you see are a circle, a diagonal, an S shape, a C shape, and a triangle. There are a few more than this, but these are the most commonly used ones in my experience.

Often times I can use the snap feature tool in procreate for the sketch, and then when I go over it with final ink lines, I hand draw it to make it look more organic. The word establishing shot is actually used in movie terminology, and if you google different kinds of shots for movies, you can find a list that is often used in graphic novels as well. Generally, for shadows, people tend to pick purple or blue, and that is the most accurate color for shadows for outdoor lighting or lighting with a warm light source. I should’ve specified in the video, start with your characters base, skin tone, and then go a little bit closer to red/a little bit darker and more saturated from that color. You don’t want to go straight to red, just go a little bit farther down on the color wheel than you already are. If you were already as low as you can go on red, you can move into Purple a little bit.
