Methods are many, principles are few.
Principle #1: Assess, treat, re-assess
That’s the only way you know if your intervention/manual therapy/exercise/whatever you want to call it worked.
Catherine is a badminton athlete and business owner who is coming to me for mid back pain, low back pain, and right knee pain. Her chief complaint today was knee and back pain when lunging and going up and down stairs.
Our assessment identified limitations in her patellar and foot & ankle mobility, which led to the inability to fully extend her knee and use her quadricep muscles to produce force into the ground. Her body compensates by rotating her spine to the right to create space to produce the downforce, lending to her back pain.
After intervening at both the knee and the foot & ankle, she can perform lunges and step ups pain-free.
