First competition weekend out since the first weekend of March 2020...two whole years. Thanks to my alma mater Avon for hosting us today and giving us the tools for the next step of this year’s journey.

First live contest event since March 2020 is in the books! Proud of everyone who got back in the proverbial saddle again after all the disruptions since then. It’s not been easy, but there were some great moments today and several SO CLOSE moments!

HHMS - 11 gold solos and 2 gold ensembles

HHHS - 9 gold solos, 2 gold ensembles, 6 silver solos, and 3 silver ensembles

We are sending 7 soloists and an ensemble to ISSMA State Solo & Ensemble next weekend!!

Spent our morning singing in a collaboration on the campus of Butler University for a workshop working with composer Stacey V. Gibbs, working on two of his pieces. This is our first choir anything since March 2020…feels good to be on stage again! 🎶

Kalen Hart has been a singer in Hamilton Heights Choirs since middle school and like so many in the program, grew up right before my eyes. The young girl I met who was a bit scared of her own voice, despite absolutely loving music and singing, grew quickly into a confident soprano, who was full of conviction and spirit for her fellow singers. She believed we could always do better and was never afraid of saying so. Kalen spurred us ever forward in her own way.

When we began this wild 20-21 school year, I asked all my choir singers to make 2 different pie charts - the first depicting what made up the choir experience before COVID and the second depicting what they hoped choir would include despite COVID. Both of Kalen's pie charts tell a story that was key to knowing who she was: that no matter what, we should always spend the majority of our efforts focused on friendship and love. She is beloved and her presence, personality, and voice is sorely missed by us all.

Vigils, memorials and prayer services were held throughout the day on Sunday to mourn the loss of Kalen Hart and Lendon Byram.
