NEW NYS DMV POINT SYSTEM TAKES EFFECT ON FEBRUARY 17, 2026!
The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is reminding motorists that beginning Monday, February 17, 2026, some of the most serious traffic violations will have increased point values. Some of the key elements include:
*increase in construction zone speeding points - increased to 8 points
*passing or overtaking a stopped school bus - increased to 8 points
*any alcohol- or drug-related driving conviction or incident - 11 points
*11 or more points in a 24-month period may result in suspension of driver's license - an increase in the look back period from 18 to 24 months.
Driving safely and keeping points off of your license is becoming more essential every day. If you currently have any points on your driving record, you may want to consider reducing those points to avoid any possible suspension or revocation of your driver's license.
You can reduce up to 4 points from your driving record by taking one of our Point Insurance Reduction Programs and save 10% off of your car insurance premium. Next workshop is Saturday, March 21 at the Arcade Fire Hall. Visit our website for more information at
