Opening Monday August 24, “Influencers: Art and Photography Faculty & Staff Exhibition.”

Our Instructors and Staff are prolific in their own art practices. This dynamic and diverse exhibition gives our dedicated educators and support staff a chance to share their creative practice with the Cabrillo students they mentor and the community at large. Nearly 30 artists will participate, presenting work spanning multiple media and disciplines, including ceramics, digital fabrication, drawing, jewelry, sculpture, mixed media, painting, printmaking, photography, video and woodworking.

Claire Thorson, “Talking in Tongues”, mixed media drawing installation

“I created these mixed media drawings, along with others, during an art residency in Spain last summer. While some of the drawings were developed as coherent small sets, this installation is purposefully diverse.

My goal in making the drawings was to explore unfamiliar visual
vocabulary and tap into ways of drawing that are less encumbered by ideas and images. I chose mixed media because it is unpredictable and yields unexpected results.

I believe that the drawings record some of the sensory attunement and subtle wonderment that accompanies experiencing a new place. The drawings are rough and provisional and may pose questions about chaos, coherence, and the embodiment of freedom.”

Looking forward to welcoming you back into the gallery!

Please join us for the Reception: Saturday, September 12, 3-5pm, there will be an Artists’ Talk at 3:30pm.

As this academic year comes to a close, and we look back at all the exhibitions we mounted since last August, we are feeling so very lucky and grateful for all of the wonderful artists who we had the pleasure to work with, the fantastic art we were honored to exhibit, and the incredibly positive responses we enjoyed hearing from our visitors. It was a truly remarkable year.

We started this past fall with a fantastic, eclectic exhibition of artwork from our recently retired faculty members in “Looking Forward”. Next up was an eye-popping installation of neon-colored flora and fauna by Ana Teresa Fernandez, in “TransPollination of Eden”. And as always, we ended the fall semester with our extremely popular annual community art showcase, the “12x12(x12) Open Invitational”.

Our Spring started out the year BIG with the magnificent, enigmatic, thought-provoking, large-scale paintings by Tamera Avery in “Wayfinders”. Next, we pivoted to photographic image making in “Turning Points”, a poignant and powerful juried exhibition of work on that theme by photographic artists from all over the country. Finally, we closed out our year by celebrating the truly impressive work that comes out of our Art and Photography Departments in this year's “Student Exhibition”.

Thank you so much to all of the artists, patrons, student workers, volunteers, visitors, support staff, administrators, and everyone else who contributed to such a successful year of bringing this wide-ranging mix of art to our students and community. And a special shout out to the Cabrillo Makerspace crew who print our gorgeous posters, wall text and vinyl for each exhibition. We are so grateful for your generosity!

We have had such a fantastic year, and we look forward to seeing you all back at the gallery in August! The gallery will re-open on August 24, 2026 with "Influencers" featuring work from Art and Art Photography Faculty and Staff at Cabrillo College.
