…the woman who wore pants?
Her home had been burgled, and Helen Hulick was called to testify in court as a witness. But it was 1938, and she came dressed in slacks. The judge was outraged, refused to let her testify, and told her to come back in a dress. She didn’t; she came back in pants again. He warned her he would find her in contempt of court if she did it a third time. She did, and he did. But the third time she also brought a lawyer who managed to get her out of jail (where she wore a denim prisoners’ dress) fairly quickly with a vow to appeal her sentence. Which they did, and which they won. Beebe also had major professional achievements, but for today, let’s just revel in her be-slacked chutzpah.
