When a child is dysregulated, what they need most is often the exact opposite of what our instincts tell us to give.

We want to explain.

We want to reason.

We want to solve the problem.

But a dysregulated child is not in problem-solving mode.

When the nervous system is overwhelmed, the thinking part of the brain temporarily steps back while the protective system takes over. In that moment, lectures, consequences, and repeated instructions are unlikely to help because the child’s brain is focused on survival, not learning.

What helps first is safety.

A calm voice.

A steady presence.

A regulated adult.

Children learn to regulate through relationships. Long before they can calm themselves, they borrow calm from the people who care for them.

This doesn’t mean allowing unsafe behaviour or removing boundaries.

It means understanding that connection is often the fastest route back to regulation.

When children feel safe, understood, and supported, their nervous systems begin to settle. Only then can reflection, learning, problem-solving, and skill-building take place.
