The first Labor Day wasn't a day off. On September 5, 1882, about 10,000 workers in New York City walked off the job without pay to march for shorter hours. Some were fired for it. The cookout came later. 🍍🌭🍔
Fun fact: we still don't know who invented Labor Day. Peter McGuire, a carpenter, and Matthew Maguire, a machinist, both have a claim — and historians have never settled it.
Before 1938, there was no federal minimum wage, no 40-hour week, and no national limit on child labor. Every one of those came from people organizing.
