Unmasking financial myths πŸ’Έ Are you telling yourself these lies?

1️⃣ "Budgeting takes time, and I don't have that kind of time."

Okay, we're ALL busy but try to take some time to really look at your daily schedule and see what you can give up doing for 1 day. Then, use that time to thoughtfully plan out your budget for a specific period of time. The more you get into the habit of doing this, the less time it takes because you will already know what to plan out for.

2️⃣ "I'll just keep this budget thing in my mind."

Sure. But can you realistically keep track of your expenses in your head? Truth is, you probably have a lot going with school or work and your brain doesn't need another load of information.

3️⃣ "There's too much going on at the moment. It's just not the right time for me."

Life is unpredictable, and you have no guarantee there will really be a better time to start budgeting/a saving plan. Actually, when life feels chaotic is probably the best time to start doing it. Budgeting in tough times will help you get steady yourself by keeping you in charge of your finances.

Happy Martin Luther King Jr. Day! 🌟 Today, we honor a visionary leader who dared to dream and inspire change in a world that desperately needed it. Let his legacy remind us that no dream is too big, and no journey too scary. We hope the quote above inspires you to take the first step in your financial journey with courage. You may not see how you'll achieve your goals but just focus on that initial step towards your dream.

πŸ’»πŸ›οΈπŸ΄ Teens spend most of their money on electronics/technology, dining out, and clothing. (Yahoo Money) Do you have a budget for that? Having a budget and a plan for your money gives you more control over your spending and can help you reach your goals. Here are some ways you can get started...

1. πŸ€” Know Where Your Money Goes: Budgeting can help you keep track of your money and understand where it's going. This way, you can make smarter choices about your spending and avoid running out of money when you need it most.

2. πŸ’° Control Your Spending: Budgeting can help you stay on top of your spending so that you don't accidentally overspend and end up in a tight spot. This is especially important when you have limited funds or specific goals in mind.

3. 🎯 Set Goals for Your Money: Budgeting can help you plan for the things you really want, like a new laptop or a trip with your friends. By setting goals, you can stay focused on what you want and avoid wasting money on things you don't need.

4. 😱 Be Ready for Surprises: Budgeting can help you set aside money for unexpected expenses, like a broken phone or a surprise bill. This way, you won't have to stress out or borrow money when something unexpected comes up.

5. πŸ“š Learn To Manage Your Money: Budgeting can teach you valuable skills for managing your money responsibly. By learning these skills now, you'll be better equipped to make smart money decisions in the future, like saving for college or investing in your dreams.

Joining the team at 8 Cents in a Jar has been an incredibly rewarding journey, one that I've been fortunate to embark on since its early stages. Witnessing the organization's growth from its infancy to its current flourishing state has been nothing short of a blessing. Like nurturing a child, it required time, dedication, and collective effort from an amazing team. Under the visionary leadership of Lashea Reaves, 8 Cents in a Jar has evolved into something even more beautiful than we initially imagined. Being part of this nonprofit family is not just a role; it's an honor to contribute to something that positively impacts the lives of others, and I look forward to continuing this meaningful journey.- Collette Schultz, Operations Manager (8 Cents in a Jar)

"My favorite interactions with 8 Cents in a Jar have been at the annual Teach Students Money Expos. Watching the kids learn in real-time how to navigate life with paying bills and seeing them understand how their credit score directly impacts their livelihood is always refreshing to see. Every student needs to have that type of understanding before graduation."- Renee Washington, Board Member (8 Cents in a Jar)

Here is the first photo captured when 8 Cents in a Jar was founded. I felt grateful for the opportunity to contribute to students' financial literacy through this organization. Knowing how to manage money wisely is a great skill to help young people make smart financial decisions and achieve their goals. Although large organizations were already teaching financial literacy, there was still a need for more inclusive and accessible financial education for students of color and those from marginalized communities, who were often excluded by traditional teaching methods. Eight years have passed, and I am proud that we still ensure every student deserves the opportunity to become financially capable, regardless of their economic background or zip code.

We get it. Setting and following a budget can sometimes make you feel restricted with your hard-earned money 😩 But budgeting isn't so much about restricting you but reclaiming control and financial freedom! We hope these quotes empower you to see budgeting from a different perspective πŸ’ͺπŸ’Έ

Last year I had the pleasure of attending the Expo as a parent. I loved the opportunity that 8 Cents in A Jar provided for my teen daughter to see in real time how her decisions today can impact her future, and how big a role finances play in that. She got to make the connection for herself of what I mean when I say, "money doesn't grow on trees". If you haven't experienced the Teach Students Money Expo, don't miss it! The students love it and us parents do too. - Amanda, Director of Programs (8 Cents In A Jar)

Andrette's Favorite Memory with 8 Cents in A Jar (2023)As a parent, I was able to accompany my son as he navigated the TSME (Teach Students Money Expo). Watching in real time how he processed his thoughts when it came to decisions, he had to make during the event was rewarding because I was able to see some of our conversations and lessons play out in real time. It also opened up the space for us to have conversations on the ride home and later on when he had to decide on spending the money earned on things that weren't as important as what he was saving for.

As staff, the virtual bank escape game was wonderful to be part of because the students were super excited to participate. Watching them think on their feet, solve math problems quickly, and work together as a group gave me all the feels.

-Andrette Lampkin, Program and Volunteer Administrator (8 Cents in a Jar)
