In the fall, Tioga Hills Elementary's Building Planning Team kicked off an initiative called "The Power of Yet", helping students see the importance of stamina, perseverance, patience, and grit. Each class was given a spider plant baby that they propagated and displayed on the front windows in the hallway. The book "The Magical Yet" was used to connect this work. Over the year, their plants grew more than they ever could have believed. In late Fall, the plants were moved to fishbowl style pots on the windows. The students talked and loved on their plants each day, and many of our Golden Bears helped water the plants regularly.

This Spring, things got out of control! The plants started having their own spider plant babies. It was time to transfer them to larger pots! This week, classes met with Mrs. Schake, 5th grade teacher and Jessica Warren, THE parent to transfer their plants. Thanks to the donations of our families and some staff members, THE received really nice self-watering pots for each plant. The Champions program also helped donate soil for this project.

Soon after, it was apparent that they had enough spider plant babies between the plants and Mrs. Warren's plants, so that every child could get a spider baby to keep! The kids love naming their own baby and want to take great care of them! The plants sit on the windowsill in the cafeteria. Some staff members will be taking them home for the summer, and some will stay in the cafeteria in the sun!

Yesterday, Tioga Hills Elementary staff, students, and musician Jared Campbell surprised Mr. Doolittle as he prepares for retirement. What started out as a Jared Campbell end-of-school-year concert (that was the "planned story") turned into a special moment honoring someone who has meant so much to THE.

While most know Mr. Doolittle as the head custodian, students and staff know he is much more than that. Every day, he took time to connect with students, offer words of encouragement and lend a helping hand when needed.

To honor Mr. Doolittle's years of service and dedication, Jared Campbell created a special song for him and sang it for the first time yesterday. (You can look forward to a snippet of that video later today). There were many smiles and more than a few tears.

As a bonus surprise, our Golden Bears sang a special song, "For Good".

Thank you, Mr. Doolittle, for your kindness, service to our school community, and the positive difference you made each day.

Here are a few more snapshots from yesterday's Mental Health Awareness Day at Tioga Hills Elementary. Vestal parent, Danielle Meissner volunteered her time to some Mindfulness activities, which included some awesome sidewalk chalk art. Synergy Ath also spent some time connecting with the students.

Today, Tioga Hills Elementary Golden Bears focused on the importance of Mental Health through various activities designed to support mindfulness and wellness.

Students rotated through different stations that included Pilates and worry stone creation. The kids made a thumbprint in the middle of their worry stones, so that they could rub their fingers back and forth when anxious or worried.

The artwork activity was creating Zentangles, which is creating repetitive patterns, while focusing on breathing.

Another fun station was held in the music room. Students worked together as they composed songs conveying different emotions.
