Book of Socks – Study + Knit
"Socks are the breakfast of our knitting diet, a physical and metaphorical underpinning to our day. They get us off to a good start, send us out into the world, and give a good indication of how the day will go. Is the cuff too tight? Frustration and discomfort from the get-go. Fabric won’t breathe? A stifled day. Has the foot sprouted a hole? Or two? A sense of sloppiness prevails—along with a fear that you’ll have to remove your shoes and expose your secret to the world." Clara Parkes, Book of Socks This 12-month study and knit will take place every second Wednesday of the month, June 2026 through May 2027. We will spend time reading and discussing the different aspects of fiber, yarn structure, and sock-knitting techniques as laid out in the book. Then, we will knit! The book contains 20 sock patterns, and we will knit 10 of the patterns. Don't worry, friends, no colorwork socks this time around! I hope that by using specifically structured yarns, you will experience the importance that yarn plays in the overall sock-making, structure, wear, and longevity. Time: 6:30 pm - 8 pm Central Time Dates: June 10th - Introduction and begin study July 8th August 12th September 9th October 14th November 11th December 9th January 6th, 2027 February 10th March 10th April 14th May 12th You will find the book to purchase on many sites; these are the sites I prefer: Thriftbooks Barnes & Noble World of Books ...and don't forget to check your local yarn store! To peruse the patterns, you can find the book on Ravelry.

Wednesday evenings, 6 - 7:30 pm CST Dates: Jan 14th, 21st Feb 11th, 18th March 11th, 18th "The construction for this sweater is completely unique and untraditional. The sleeves and the body are knit in the round all at the same time, separated by steeks. At the yoke, the underarms are cast off and the yoke is worked without steeks. After the sweater is knitted it resembles a large poncho. The steeks are then cut, and the sweater is seamed along the side and sleeves. This method has several advantages: 1) all the stripes match up, every time 2) there are very few ends to weave in (even with all the color changes) 3) there is no need for double points/magic loop or any other form of small circumference knitting. Editor's note: This sweater may look mild mannered, but is in fact actually revolutionary in its construction! Scroll down to the next set of pictures to see how to get perfectly matching sleeves, as you knit the body and sleeves all at once, and then steek to separate them. It's absolutely brilliant. And this note is pink so you don't miss this amazing detail!" - designer, Todd Gocken, Knitty.com issue Winter 2020 This construction!! This class is all about this construction. If you want perfectly matching stripes, colorwork, handspun yarn patterning, etc, then this is the pattern for you. Knit the sweater in one piece and use any stitch patterning you desire. The pattern is a beautiful stranded colorwork, but I plan to use it for perfectly matched handspun yarn placement. It would be a great pattern to use your Spincycle, handspun, or small batch mill-spun yarns. BONUS: no sleeve island! Techniques we'll explore: steeking basics gauge math to use different weights of yarn seaming alterations for fit The pattern is available for free through Knitty.com, here. You can view the pattern info, projects, and yarn ideas on the pattern Ravelry page, here. Photos courtesy of Knitty.com, Todd Gocken
