Christian Business Leader Encourages Olivet Students to “Earn More Than Money”
Olivet University welcomed Dr. Titus Yu, a veteran business leader and ministry founder from Hong Kong, for a special lecture titled “Earn More Than Money,” where he challenged students to see their future careers not only as a means of financial success, but as a platform for mission, evangelism, and service.
The lecture, held on June 13, 2026, introduced students to the biblical and practical vision of tentmaking ministry. Drawing from Acts 18, Dr. Yu reflected on the example of Apostle Paul, who worked as a tentmaker alongside Priscilla and Aquila while continuing to preach the gospel. He emphasized that Paul’s work was not separate from his ministry, but became part of the mission field itself.
Dr. Yu shared from his own decades of experience as a senior leader in the insurance industry, where he has served hundreds of thousands of clients and managed a large team of agents. Rather than viewing business merely as a career, he explained how God opened doors for evangelism through relationships in the workplace. Over the years, his company fellowship and related ministry efforts helped lead many colleagues and professionals to Christ and inspired workplace Bible studies, fellowships, and evangelistic gatherings.
A major theme of the lecture was that Christians should not separate faith from daily work. Dr. Yu encouraged students to recognize that every profession can become a place of mission when believers are equipped with biblical knowledge, wisdom, and a heart for people. He pointed to Priscilla and Aquila as examples of lay believers who were not church pastors, yet were deeply prepared in the Word of God and able to teach Apollos “the way of God more adequately.”
Dr. Yu also shared several Business as Mission examples from around the world, including a goat project for widows in Pakistan, greenhouse farming after an earthquake in Qinghai, fish farming and food trucks in Ghana, and café and product-based mission projects in other regions. Through these examples, he explained how business wisdom can make ministry more sustainable and effective. Instead of simply giving temporary aid, he encouraged students to think creatively about models that can multiply resources, restore dignity, and continue serving communities over time.
During the question-and-answer session, Dr. Yu offered practical advice on time management, leadership, business models, family, and evangelism. He said that leaders must learn to focus on the most important tasks and delegate wisely. He also emphasized that the strongest motivation in both business and ministry comes when people understand the mission behind their work.
When asked about persuading people, Dr. Yu explained that true influence does not come from merely trying to sell something, but from sincerely helping others. He connected this principle to evangelism, saying that sharing the gospel should come from love and a desire for the good of the other person.
The lecture left students with a broader vision for their future vocations. Whether they are called to church ministry, business, education, media, or other fields, Dr. Yu encouraged them to become faithful “tentmakers” who use their skills, resources, and relationships for the kingdom of God.
Through his message, students were reminded that a Christian career can become much more than a way to earn money. When surrendered to God, work itself can become a channel of mission, service, and lasting spiritual fruit.
