Thank you so much to Delta Schools Federal Credit Union and Bite of Reality for supporting the students at Live Oak High School! Today our students got to experience a hands-on simulation that gave them a taste of real-world financial realities.
Students were given a fictional occupation, salary, spouse and family, student loan debt, credit card debt, and medical insurance payments. They then walked around to various table-top stations to “purchase” housing, transportation, food, clothing, household necessities, day care, and other needs. Thankfully, this activity also included a “credit union” to help with their financial needs.
Hopefully, these pictures capture the enthusiasm that our students felt during the activity, especially as they were dealing with pushy “car salespeople” and a commission based “realtor”. Many even got a “Fickle Finger of Fate” that produced unexpected (and unwanted) financial difficulties along the way.
We hope this activity taught our student how to make financial decisions and give them a better understanding of the challenges of living on a budget.
