Honey Locust (Gleditsia triacanthos)

You may recognize honey locust by its distinctive seed pods, but there's much more to this remarkable hardwood than meets the eye.

The face grain (left) highlights the wood's natural color and grain, while the end grain (10×, right) reveals the microscopic structures unique to the species.

Three things that make Honey Locust stand out:

It glows under UV light
Honey locust contains natural compounds called extractives that fluoresce under ultraviolet (UV) light, causing the wood to glow a bright yellow-green. It's one of the more striking examples of fluorescence in a North American hardwood.

Its thorns may be relics of the Ice Age
Wild honey locust trees can produce large, branched thorns on their trunks and branches. Many scientists believe these formidable thorns evolved to protect the tree from giant browsing mammals like mammoths and giant ground sloths that once lived in North America.

The seed pods are surprisingly sweet
The sticky pulp inside mature honey locust seed pods is naturally sweet—a feature that inspired the tree's common name. Wildlife and livestock have long eaten the sugary pulp, helping disperse the seeds.

Take your circular saw filing skills to the next level at NTC!

This September, Northcentral Technical College is offering Circular Saw Filing Parts 1 & 2 at the Antigo campus. Designed for current saw filers, saw filer trainees, and sawmill managers, these intensive courses combine classroom instruction with hands-on training in the NTC Saw Filing Lab.

Part 1 | September 8–18
Build a strong foundation in circular saw filing through four progressive courses covering saw performance and cutting efficiency, benching and fitting circular saws, maintenance and repair, precision adjustment, and safe shop practices.

Part 2 | September 21–25
Take those skills further with advanced training focused on circular saws 30 inches and larger, including headrig and deck saws. Participants will gain hands-on experience benching and sharpening headrig sawblades along with saw mandrel and collar machine center maintenance. Completing Part 2 along with Part 1 earns the full NTC Circular Saw Filing Certificate.

With the hands-on nature of this training, space is limited to just 10 students for Part 1 and 6 students for Part 2, so don't wait to reserve your spot! Limited grant funding is also available to help qualifying employers offset training costs.

Red Pine (Pinus resinosa)

Despite its name, red pine isn't named for its needles—it's named for the reddish bark that develops as the tree matures.

Three things that make Red Pine stand out:

Known for growing straight and tall
Red pine naturally develops long, straight trunks with relatively few lower branches, producing high-quality lumber used in construction, utility poles, and other structural applications.

A reforestation success story
Throughout the 20th century, millions of red pine seedlings were planted across the Great Lakes region to restore forests, reduce soil erosion, and provide a sustainable source of timber. Today, many of these plantations have matured into thriving forests.

Needles always come in pairs
One of the easiest ways to identify a red pine is by its needles. They grow in bundles of two, are long and slender, and snap cleanly when bent—a simple field characteristic that helps distinguish them from many other pine species.

Three days of learning, problem-solving and hands-on experience with the science behind drying quality lumber!

The 2026 Kiln Drying Short Course, held August 11–13 at NTC’s Antigo Campus, brought industry professionals together to strengthen their knowledge of wood drying and kiln operations.

Presented by Northcentral Technical College and the Great Lakes Kiln Drying Association, the course combined classroom instruction with practical lab exercises. Participants explored everything from wood structure and moisture relationships to drying systems, kiln schedules, moisture measurement, lumber quality and kiln controls.

The photos tell the story; from classroom discussions to kiln demonstrations and hands-on exercises, participants had opportunities to put concepts into practice and learn alongside others working in the forest products industry.

Three things that make Hard Maple stand out:

The maple behind maple syrup
Hard maple trees produce sap with a higher sugar content than most other maple species, making them the preferred choice for producing maple syrup.

Built to take a beating
Its exceptional hardness and wear resistance make hard maple the wood of choice for bowling lanes, butcher blocks, flooring, and many professional basketball courts.

Sometimes nature adds extra character
Most hard maple has a straight grain, but some trees develop spectacular figured patterns like bird's-eye, curly, or quilted maple—making them especially valuable for furniture, instruments, and decorative woodworking.

That’s a wrap on the 2026 Wood Industry Teacher Camp!

What happens when educators step outside the classroom and into the world of modern wood manufacturing? They get a firsthand look at the careers, technology, and opportunities waiting for their students.

Held August 5–6 at the NTC Wood Technology Center of Excellence in Antigo, the Wood Industry Teacher Camp was all about hands-on, immersive learning. Educators had the opportunity to explore the forest products industry, connect classroom learning with real-world careers, and take home new ideas and resources to share with their students.

A big thank you to everyone who participated and helped make this experience possible. We hope these conversations and experiences continue back in the classroom and inspire the next generation to explore careers in the wood industry.

Osage Orange (Maclura pomifera)

Despite its name, Osage orange doesn't produce edible oranges—but it does produce one of North America's toughest hardwoods.

Three things that make Osage Orange stand out:

The legendary bow wood
Osage orange was highly prized by Native American tribes for making bows because of its exceptional strength, flexibility, and shock resistance.

Built to last
Its outstanding natural decay resistance made it a favorite for fence posts, many of which have remained in service for decades—even without preservative treatments.

One of the best firewoods
Osage orange has one of the highest heat values of any North American wood species, producing long-lasting, high-heat fires.

Black Cherry (Prunus serotina)

Black cherry is one of North America's most prized hardwoods, known for its rich color, excellent workability, and timeless beauty.

Three things that make Black Cherry stand out:

It gets darker with age
Unlike many woods that fade in sunlight, black cherry naturally darkens over time, developing the rich reddish-brown color that makes it a favorite for fine woodworking.

A furniture maker's favorite
Black cherry machines, sands, and finishes exceptionally well, making it a top choice for high-quality furniture, cabinetry, and architectural millwork.

More than just beautiful wood
Its small, dark fruits provide an important food source for birds and other wildlife, making black cherry a valuable species both in the forest and in the woodshop.

⚖ Guess the Weight!

These two boards are the exact same size, but one weighs nearly twice as much as the other.

Can you guess which is heavier?

💡 The difference comes down to density. Different wood species have different cell structures, which means some pack more wood fiber into the same amount of space. That affects not only weight, but also strength, hardness, machining, and the best uses for each species.

At Northcentral Technical College's Wood Science program, students learn how these differences influence everything from manufacturing to product performance.
