Beef Management Workshop Taking Place March 4
(Cecil) Even though the value of an individual beef animal is higher now than at any point in history, it is critical that every decision and investment made on a beef operation maximizes the return and potential profit. This is particularly true for beef cow/calf operators, as a decision today will likely impact profitability for many years to come. What bull should I buy or utilize? What technological and hardware investments will actually pay for themselves? How do I feed my herd properly and most affordably?
All of these questions are important and all will be addressed as part of a beef management workshop being held in Cecil on the evening of Tuesday, March 4. The workshop is open to anyone and is sponsored by the Extension Offices of Langlade, Marinette, Oconto, Outagamie, Shawano, and Winnebago Counties.
University of Wisconsin – Madison, Division of Extension Beef Outreach Specialist Bill Halfman will be leading discussions on ‘Understanding EPD’s and Bull Selection Criteria’, as well as providing a hands-on look at how your herds view your handling facilities. His unique handling display materials allow attendees to visually analyze how various handling facility designs impact ease of handling, animal and human safety, and cost/simplicity.
Other topics on the agenda include the current realities of virtual fencing technology and maximizing forage & animal performance from your farm’s forage acres. These discussions will be led by Regional Extension Educators Stephanie Bowers and Scott Reuss, respectively. Another key component of the evening is the questions asked by attendees, which will allow additional topic discussions and more detailed situational understanding of the topics.
The event is taking place at the Cecil Village Hall & Community Center, located at 111 E Hofman St., Cecil, beginning at 5:30 p.m. with registration and supper, provided by Primal Eats catering. Discussions will take place from about 6:15 to 8:15 p.m. with time afterward for individual topic questions and follow-up. Registration fee is $25 per person, including meal and all educational materials.
