Lessons taught through private instruction at the Community Music Institute
at Lebanon Valley College carry with them a long tradition of quality. Established
more than 40 years ago by Ruth Engle Bender, a highly respected piano teacher
and member of the College faculty, the Institute began by offering piano instruction
to school-age children. Today,
private lessons are offered in piano, voice, vi

olin, viola, cello, bass (acoustic and
electric), clarinet, flute, saxophone, bassoon, oboe, French horn, trumpet, trombone,
tuba, euphonium, guitar, and percussion. Additionally, a variety of ensembles are offered and a full
curriculum of Kindermusik classes are held for students from newborn to seven
years old. Although some of the students in the Community Music Institute’s programs
are college bound and are preparing for careers in music, most are studying for
personal enjoyment and the desire to enrich their lives with music. All age and
ability levels are welcome, from the very young violinist to the retiree who always
wanted to play an instrument or sing. The student and the student’s goals are
always kept in mind as the reach for excellence continues. The Community Music Institute is a member of the National Guild for Community
Arts Education. The Kindermusik division of CMI was recently recognized
as a Maestro Kindermusik Program based on the quality and breadth of the
program.

Meet our new Coordinator! Serena Heffner has been a voice instructor for CMI since 2015. She is thrilled to join the Administrative team for CMI. In addition to teaching voice through CMI, she also is an Adjunct Voice Instructor for LVC and the Director of Choral Activities at Linden Hall School for Girls in Lititz.
