English classes at The Valley are places where stories come alive. Whether reading fiction or poetry, writing and editing journalistic copy, or creating stories for the stage, screen, or page, English majors have the opportunity to interact with and create their own narratives. Students choose a pathway of study in literature, communications, creative writing, theater, or secondary education, but

the basis for all pathways is the study of literature: imaginative, complex, and challenging texts in a variety of genres. Our goal is to teach students to write, speak, and think more effectively.

((ENG-Secondary Ed Alumni - Back to School Edition!!)) Victoria Fredericksen ‘25 - English major with Specialization in Secondary Education, Spanish and Musical Theater minors - just started her second year of teaching 8th grade at Northeast Middle School.

“This year I have a really fantastic group of students who are very hard working and are already growing as a wonderful class community and family. One new thing we are doing in the classroom this year is a lot more reading!! As a school, we are participating in Red Knights Read where every student and staff member in our is reading the same novel at the same time (currently reading Look Both Ways by Jason Reynolds) and I’m hoping to continue that even with my teaching team and individual classes. I’m looking forward to showing students new books and encouraging them to read more! I am also looking forward to planning, directing, and presenting another play or musical with the NEMS Drama Club again this year (that had their first musical in over a decade last year)!! Outside of teaching, I’m currently rehearsing for a community theater production of Bonnie and Clyde!!”

Advice for our current students? “Get involved and build a strong community of friends. Keeping in touch with those friends post-graduation is difficult, but the relationships you build will stay!”

Wed. Where Are They Now?

Congratulations to Alli Karavas ‘19 -- double major in English & Sociology with a minor in Global Studies -- on completing her Masters degree in Learning and Organizational Change for Northwestern University!

Alli has been doing impressive work since her time at LVC. She says, “Currently, I am an HR Director for The Barn Resort based out in Gettysburg. Previously I worked for larger companies like West Shore Home, Walmart, and Walt Disney World” (!!!).

We asked Alli for advice for current students based on what she knows now. She said, “If I could give the students at LVC any advice it is to make connections, it makes a world of a difference in your career, and do not be afraid to fail or follow plan B. Sometimes it works out better than what plan A would have been.” Wise words!

Congrats to Vinson ‘25 --double major in English & Social Justice and Civic Engagement--who recently earned a position at Lebanon Valley College within the Dept. of Humanities! As Administrative Assistant, she’ll be enhancing and supporting our programs and developing new initiatives. She’ll also be lending support to FYE, General Education, and the Honors Program! Athena was a rock star student (transfer from HACC!) when she was here--earning the Rising Leading Award from the Lebanon Chamber of Commerce, serving in positions such as Community Organizer for LVC’s Environmental Sustainability Advisory Committee, ENG+CW Student Ambassador, Social Media Manager, Archive Intern, Social Media Librarian Intern at the Annville Free Library, and more. Athena joins us from her most recent impactful work as Youth Services Assistant at the Manheim Township Public Library. We are so (so) thrilled to bring her back! Go Athena!

Friday marked the Fall ‘26 return of our PROCESS & PRODUCTION studio !! // Most Fridays 11-4p in our fantastic wood-floored makers space!// This Friday, students worked on all sorts of things: visible mending, needlefelting, costume making, jewelry, and other fun stuff.

The Process & Production Studio = drop-in/gathering for book arts, collaborative & individual tapestry weaving, yarn-spinning tutorials, knitting, & crocheting, and more.

This, as part of our broader interest in the extraordinary benefits of DIY, analogue, making things slowly, together, purposefully. Broadly we care about \*\*Slow making/fashion, \*\*Slow foods (farm to table), \*\*Slowing as a tool for innovation, \*\*Slowing as a tool for mindfulness, \*\*Slowing as a tool for wellness, \*\*Slowing as a tool for sustainability, \*\*Slowing as a tool for community building, \*\*Slowing as a tool for student-centered, collaborative, transformative, experiential education in and beyond the classroom. ((internship update)) Congrats to Kohai Pavan ‘28 --double major in English & Creative Writing with a minor in Music--who earned the position of Archival Assistant at our very own Bishop Library!

While learning about archival best practices and LVC’s archive, Kohai will also be drawing materials from the archive to assemble a display showcasing the history of LVC’s Physical Therapy program in honor of its 20th anniversary!

((recent grad update!!)) Last time we checked in with Lucey Walton ‘25 --double major in English & Creative Arts--she was finishing up her practicum in Teaching English as a Foreign Language and teaching English to students from Taiwan.

Now, Lucey is working and living in Ireland. She is currently working at the beautiful Adare Manor in County Limerick. In her own words: “I have been living in Ireland for 6 months now, and the time has flown by! Working at Adare Manor has been an amazing introduction into careers in luxury hospitality, where I have also been able to develop a new passion for bartending and mixology! Although I am working in a different field, I am still very interested in global education, as one of my favorite parts of working in hospitality is getting to meet and work with people from all over the world. From focusing my senior year capstone project on Irish superstitions and history to moving to Ireland less than a year later, it has been incredible to see how my time at LVC and in the English & Creative Writing Dept. has come full circle!”

Wed. Where Are They Now?

Hello Everyone!

My name is Mike B (class 21+23). I work as a family therapist for children who are at high risk for out-of-home-placement. My preferred modalities are existential and narrative therapy. I enjoy the frog pond I recently dug earlier this year and creating music based on pictures my fiancé sends me.

My story is filled with subplots that somehow converged into my path of studying behavioral health management at a doctoral level. Even writing out “doctoral” is a shocking experience for me. I left my undergrad with a 2.7 GPA. Somehow, I was accepted into my graduate program. Determined to change the narrative of being labeled a “slacker,” I gave it my best. I graduated by the skin of my teeth. So why a doctorate? (A question I ask myself routinely) “Why milk is white, why holly is green." Why anything?” It may be written, but who wrote it? Right now I’m writing. Who is writing for you? I want the story to get better for everyone. I can do that by writing a better system than what we have now.

I am not motivated. I am determined.
