🚨 ALEA Clears Up Confusion Over Alabama Student Driver License Law 🚨

Many Alabama parents and students have recently been asking whether the state's driver license rules changed on August 1. According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency (ALEA), the answer is no. The law governing driver license eligibility for students with certain school disciplinary actions has not changed and remains fully in effect.

ㅤ

ㅤ

The law, commonly known as Taylor's Law, was passed by the Alabama Legislature in 2009. It allows disciplinary actions such as in-school suspension, out-of-school suspension, placement in an alternative school, and expulsion to accumulate disciplinary points that can delay when a student becomes eligible to receive a learner's permit or driver license.

ㅤ

ㅤ

ALEA says recent confusion stemmed from House Bill 33, which proposed lowering the age threshold from 19 to 17 for certain licensing provisions. Although the bill passed the Alabama House of Representatives, it did not pass the Alabama Senate and never became law. As a result, no changes took effect on August 1, 2026.

ㅤ

ㅤ

Schools—not ALEA—are responsible for maintaining disciplinary records, assigning disciplinary points, and certifying a student's eligibility through the required DL-193 form. ALEA's role is simply to administer Alabama's driver license laws as written by the Legislature. Students under age 19 must also continue to meet Alabama's attendance or graduation requirements before being issued a learner's permit or driver license.

A lot of laws get passed quietly while people are busy surviving life.

Working.
Paying bills.
Raising children.
Fighting depression.
Trying to stay afloat.

And that’s why it’s important to pay attention.

Today Alabama passed HB1 and SB1 tied to redistricting and election maps.

Some people see just another bill.
Others see a warning sign.

Because history has shown us that when representation changes..resources shift, voices weaken, and communities already struggling often get pushed further into the background.

This is not about fear.
This is about awareness.

Too many people fought, marched, prayed, and died for us to become disconnected from what’s happening around us.

Please research these bills for yourself.
Read beyond social media.
Teach your children the importance of voting, history, and civic awareness.

An uninformed community is easier to control.
An educated community is harder to silence.

Look up:
• Alabama HB1
• Alabama SB1
• Alabama redistricting lawsuits
• Voting Rights Act

Stay aware.
Stay educated.
Stay involved.
