July 4, also known as Independence Day, is the federal holiday commemorating the adoption of the Declaration of Independence in 1776, which declared the United States' separation from Great Britain. Although independence had been declared, delegates of the Continental Congress had not yet inked their signatures onto the document. On August 2, 1776, when most delegates signed the Declaration of Independence, it became official. Congress passed a law making Independence Day a federal holiday on June 28, 1870.
