Oysters may be small, but their impact on Alabama’s coast is mighty. Healthy oyster reefs filter water, provide food and shelter for hundreds of marine species, and help protect shorelines by reducing wave energy and erosion.

Across coastal Alabama, conservation and restoration efforts are helping rebuild this valuable natural resource. Through Alabama Extension’s nonconsumptive oyster gardening program, volunteers grow oysters for habitat enhancement and restoration, not for eating. Recycled shells provide the hard surface young oysters need to attach, grow and eventually help form new reefs.
